Ranking Title Success for Grieve

Congratulations to Erlend Grieve who on Saturday won the Orkney League Singles defeating Keith Keldie in the final. This was Erlend’s second OPA league singles title after winning the inaugural event back in the 2004/05 season.
30 players entered this ranking tournament so with 29 matches required games were spread over two venues with three of the quarters played at Orkney Golf Club and the remaining quarter of the draw at the Kirkwall Legion. The open draw format threw out several tasty early matches and led to early exits for some of the high ranking players. The semi-finals saw Erlend win through by 4 frames to nil against Michael Rendall and Keith secured his place with a 4-1 victory against Graham Bell.
The final saw the first couple of frames shared before Erlend established a foothold in the match moving in to a commanding 4-1 lead in the best of 9 frames contest. A combination of Keith’s never say die attitude along with the bags of talent at his disposal saw him fight back and level the match at 4 frames all and force a decider. Both players had a visit each in the final frame before Erlend took his chance and cleared his remaining colours and the black to clinch the victory.
Thanks to all players who took part in the competition, to the Kirkwall Legion for their part and lastly to our excellent hosts at the Orkney Golf Club.
