Sinclair Retains Orkney Pool Classic

Another busy day of pool on Saturday at the Standing Stones Hotel came to a climax with the final of the Orkney Pool Classic, one of the seven open County ranking events played over the season. Also played throughout the day on Saturday was the second annual open Festive Singles tournament.
The 'Classic' is one of the trickiest events on the pool calendar with every round best of 7 frames so very little room for error in any match. 70 players started the tournament and the final two standing were perennial finalist and trophy winner Erik Wilson and current holder of the Classic, Paul Sinclair. In a high quality final there was little to separate the pair and at 3-3 it was anyones final. It was Paul who held his nerve in the deciding frame to claim a 4-3 victory and retain the trophy.
In the Festive Singles the double elimination format ensured there was lots of pool to be played and a second chance for everyone. It was Michael Rendall who took advantage of the second chance format after losing earlier in the day he won his way through the 'second chance' section to play Darren Tait (winner of the main section) in the overall final. Having not lost up to the final Darren had to win the final once to claim victory while Michael, having lost once already in the day, had to beat Darren twice to win overall. A vocal crowd were in lively spirits during the final and this spurred on Michael on to victory and record back-to-back Festive Singles wins.
