Erik Wilson Secures Double Elimination Title

With ranking points to play for as well as the trophy a good turn out of 39 people contested the opening Open Singles competition of the 2018/19 season. The Double Elimination format provided everyone with the safety net of being able to lose one match without going out but lose a second match and your tournament was over.

Four tables were in operation for most of the day and with so many people involved and with there being a 'second chance' section as well as the 'winners' section they were all needed with over 70 matches played on the day. Erik Wilson secured his place in the final going through the 'winners' section of the draw undefeated. Joining him after winning his way through the 'second chance' section was Erlend Grieve.

The final was a very close affair with Erlend having to win twice (as Erik had not lost at this point) while Erik only had to win once. Although late in the day the was a high standard of pool being played with Erlend edging the first match 3-2. This meant that another best of 5 frames match had to be played as both players had now lost one match each throughout the day. The second match was equally as tight and after sharing the first four frames a deciding frame was required and it was Erik who potted the winning black to secure the trophy.

Congratulations to Erik on his victory and thanks to all who participated and to the Standing Stones Hotel for hosting the event and their continued support of Orkney Pool.
