A very busy day of pool last Saturday at the Standing Stones hotel for the 4th annual Seniors East v West matches. 24 men and 10 women battled it out for the spoils with both East teams setting out to defend the trophies they had won the previous year.
The West men set their stall out early and played their way in to a 4-2 lead after the six doubles matches had been played. A further 3 singles wins in the first 4 matches put them in a strong position overall at 7-3 up with 10 required overall for the win. This provoked a reaction from the East guys though and they went on an incredible run winning 6 out of the next 7 games to go 9-8 up and turn the match on its head. A West win in the final game made it an incredible 9-9 draw and honours even in an excellent and entertaining match. The East keep hold of the trophy for another 12 months as they were defending champions.
In the Womens match the East came in as strong favourites having won all 3 previous meetings with their West counterparts. The 3 doubles matches were all very close but it was the West who took a slender 2-1 lead in to the second session with the singles matches to play. A 1-1 draw and an East 2-0 win in the first two matches of the Singles moved the East Women in to the lead 4 to 3 but back-to-back 2-0 wins for the West got them the 7 points required for victory and etched their names on the trophy for the first ever time 🏆.
Also played on Saturday were the Senior Men's and Womens Singles tournaments. The womens final was a repeat of the 2018 final with Biz winning her 3rd title beating East teammate Jean in the final.
The men's Singles also saw an all East final with defending champion Colin Reid defeating John Thompson 4-2 in the final. Congratulations to Colin and Biz.
