Orkney enjoyed a double success last weekend in the Standing
Stones Hotel, as both their Men’s and Ladies teams emerged victorious in the
annual inter-county matches against Shetland. The men’s match was a very high
standard affair with both teams making several first visit frame winning
clearances. It was Orkney who started the strongest though as they took an 11-2
lead into the second session. The lead was maintained throughout with the final
score ending 26-13 in Orkney’s favour as they gained revenge for a narrow 20-19
defeat up in Shetland last year.
The Orkney Ladies also got off to a great start in their
match as they led 7-3 after the first session. Shetland did battle hard though and
managed to peg the score back to 12-13 at one stage. It was Orkney who held
their nerve however to run out deserved 17-13 winners in the end and to win the
trophy for the first time since 2014.
In the ‘B’ inter-counties it was Shetland who came away with
the honours in both matches. The Men’s team had an enthralling 14-13 win as the
match went down to a deciding frame, while the women had a 19-11 success. The
final event of the weekend was The Allan Johnson memorial singles which was
played for the second year. All players involved in the inter county matches
took part and it was Erik Wilson of Orkney who ended up the victor as he
defeated Shetland’s Chris Young in the final.
All in all a fantastic weekend was had by everyone, with all
matches played in a very competitive yet friendly spirit. A massive thank you
goes to all the players involved, to the spectators, to all in the OPA
committee who helped throughout the weekend, to Erlend for his tireless work
over the weekend and to the Standing Stones Hotel and their staff for providing
such an excellent venue.
